“Every construction activity certainly has an impact on the environment. However, we can try to balance these environmental impacts with wise actions. "One of them is by using a Geosynthetic Technology System which has been proven to be a solution in reducing the quantity of carbon gas emissions in the construction sector," said the President Director of PT. Geoforce Indonesia Mr. Dandung Sri Harninto, S.T., M.T., as a resource person at the Civil Engineering Webinar Series Session 86 with the theme "The Big Role of Geosynthetics in Sustainable Construction" Friday, 27 October 2023. This webinar organized by SIPILPEDIA ACADEMY aims to educate the public about changes drastic climate change as a result of global warming and building public awareness to contribute to curbing the rate of climate change by making efforts to realize sustainable infrastructure development oriented towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In fact, the construction sector has a huge influence on climate change that occurs on earth. This sector contributes 23% of the air pollution that occurs on earth in the manufacture of building materials, transportation, and work processes at construction sites. In addition, the construction sector also contributes to landfill waste pollution by 50% because this sector relies heavily on fast and cheap solutions that need replacement every year or even every few months. In fact, this sector also contributes greatly to the pollution of drinking water sources by 40% during work on construction sites and the manufacture of raw materials. Therefore, Geosynthetics is present as an alternative solution in sustainable construction that cares about the safety of our beloved earth and future generations.
Geosynthetics are various types of synthetic polymer materials which are specifically fabricated for use in geotechnical engineering applications which function as separators, filtration, drainage, reinforcement, surface erosion control and so on. The Geosynthetic Technology System seeks to realize sustainable development using reduce, reuse and recycle resource use methods so that it can reduce the carbon footprint of construction. Thus, the use of Geosynthetic materials makes an extraordinary contribution to environmental safety with a minimal carbon footprint resulting in building a geotechnical structure that has the same function, stability and safety factors when compared to conventional construction methods.-
